The clubs of St James

White’s club

It was founded in the late 17th century by an Italian named Bianco as “White’s Chocolate House”.

Its members were statesmen such as Robert Walpole and Fox, men of fashion like Lord Chesterfield, Horace Walpole, “Beau” Brummell who would appear ar the bow-window, writers like Steele and Gibbon.

Boodle’s club

It was founded by Edward Boodle in 1762.

Among its members have been politicians like Pitt the Elder and Pitt the Younger, and the Duke of Wellington.

Brook’s club

Founded in 1764 by William Almack, the club first met at Almack’s (Pall Mall) and moved here in 1778.

Its members included Reynolds, Garrick, Sheridan.
