Plan and bird’s eye view of the Old Town in Edinburgh (1647)

This map combines both modes of representation, a current practice of the times. To the left, the Castle on its rock, to the right the palace of Holyrood House, linked by the high street lined with houses (the Royal Mile); where it broadens after leaving the Castle stands St Giles Cathedral. At the other end, the East section neighbouring Holyrood is the Canongate suburb, which became part of Edinburgh only in 1856. To the North are marshy grounds - those that were later drained to form the New Town.
