William Herschel, born in Hanover in 1738, came to England as a musician. He settled in Bath in 1766, where he became an organist and composed madrigals which were sung at the Theatre Royal. He also worked on astronomy; his house contained a workshop and he built a telescope, with which he discovered the planet Uranus in 1781, thus making the known confines of the solar system recede. He left Bath in 1782 and died in 1822.
