Inveraray, built as a model new town between 1753 and 1776 by the 3rd Duke of Argyll close to his seat of Inveraray Castle, on the shores of Loch Fyne, to replace the old town.

It is a planned town with straight streets and houses all whitewashed, made of stone to avoid fire.

In 1774, a woollen factory opened in the town.

The main street: view towards the church, and opposite view from the church to the Loch.
