Aerial view of the Royal Crescent built by John Wood the Younger from 1767; it is of the Ionic order, the half oval of the colonnade being only punctuated by two pairs of twinned columns framing the central bay. The whole is a sequence of houses, each with an elevation respecting the overall design so as to give the appearance of a single building , whereas the interior arrangement could often vary. Smollett described it in Humphry Clinker, and Sheridan uses it as a comic comparison in The Rivals.
