The orders of architecture

In Somerset House the Strand façade has a piano nobile of the Corinthian order whereas the doors in the courtyard are of the simpler Ionic.

The use of architectural motifs

Rustication being a symbol of strength is used for public buildings. in Somerset House the courtyard has rustication on the ground storey only for the back of the Strand block - here in the middle - but rustication up the whole façade on the other sides (which housed government offices) - here on both sides.

In Blackfriars Bridge the facing is rusticated.

The Venetian window is used in Whitehall. Related motifs are to be found at Somerset House.

The Thames façade of Somerset House has a Palladian Bridge like Pulteney Bridge in Bath and like the one at Prior Park in Bath.
